Our Story
It started with a pub nobody else wanted.
In 1987 the Marsh family bought the old Gage & Anchor Hotel on the Fremantle docks — peeling paint, sagging verandah, the best position on the harbour. They spent a year restoring it by hand and reopened it with three rules that still run the Group today.
Service craft
Hospitality is skilled work. We train it, we roster for it, and we promote from within because the best venue managers in this Group once carried three plates up the Gage's back stairs.
Fair work
Rosters published early. Penalty rates paid properly. An enterprise agreement our own staff helped negotiate. A business built on people can't be built on cut corners.
Coastal character
Every venue belongs to its place — the working harbour at Fremantle, the city foreshore, the quiet of Geographe Bay. We'd rather be of Western Australia than merely in it.
Four Decades
How the Group grew
- 1987
- The Marsh family purchases and restores the Gage & Anchor Hotel, Fremantle. First beer pulled on a Friday; the kitchen didn't open for another month because the stove "wasn't right yet".
- 1994
- The bistro extension opens — 120 seats and a menu built around the Fremantle fishing fleet's morning catch.
- 2003
- Seaview Events & Catering is formed after one wedding on the Gage's verandah turns into forty enquiries.
- 2011
- The Group opens The Seaview Grand Perth on the city foreshore — 120 rooms, The Promenade restaurant and Salt cocktail bar. The events team takes over the Grand's dedicated functions floor.
- 2019
- Seaview Bay Retreat opens outside Dunsborough — forty villas, a tours desk, and partnerships with neighbouring cellar doors.
- Today
- Five businesses, one family behind them, and a head office in Perth that still answers its own phones.
"My parents' rule was simple: look after the person in front of you, and the business looks after itself. We've never found a reason to complicate it." Evelyn Marsh — Group Managing Director
